The Alternative Proposal is being offered to the Legislature. It has been developed by Cal-DSA (California Disabilities Services Association).  Other advocacy groups, including The Arc of California and the Infant Development Association are signing on to endorse this alternative to the proposed DDS cuts.

The Alternative Proposal is extremely technical but we are posting it here for those of you who are interested.  It is very important to note that while the Alternative Proposal accepts 11 of the 15 DDS recommendations, the acceptance is conditional.  Acceptance will not be final until we have seen the actual wording (law changes) being proposed to implement the recommendations.  As the saying goes: "the devil is in the details." The 11 recommendations being conditionally accepted amount to 44% of the total savings being recommended by DDS.  Alternate methods are proposed for the other 56% of the savings.

What to Do if You Are Not Able to Attend the Demonstration:

For those of you who are not able to attend the demonstration and hearing in Sacramento on Wednesday, April 22, there is still a way you can help.  Please contact Assembly Member Jerry Hill by Wednesday morning. He is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee that is meeting that afternoon.

You can let Mr. Hill know if you want his committee to reject the DDS recommendations. You can let him know if  you want his committee to accept the alternate proposal being offered by advocates.

Please note that Jerry Hill is a good man and a  friend to people with developmental disabilities.  He is sensitive to your issues and wants to help.  He is our FRIEND—PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL!  Let him know that you understand there is a budget crisis and that we want to do our part.  But let him know how strongly you feel that community services must be preserved and that there  are alternative ways to save the money that must be saved.
